Going camping for the first time can be a rewarding experience with the right preparation. Below are four keys to a successful trip:
1. Find an established campground. While some campers like to hike into the woods before setting up camp, it's much easier to drive directly up to an established campsite. Whether run by a state park or a private business, sites generally include a fire pit, a picnic table, and bathrooms.
2. Round up camping gear. The vital pieces of equipment are a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, flashlights, and camp chairs. To save money, consider renting or borrowing more costly equipment.
3. Make the first trip a short one. Go camping for just one or two nights to get a feel for what it's like.
4. Bring plenty of food and firewood. From s'mores to hot dogs, camping food is often a highlight of the trip, and running out is sure to dampen the mood.
